Best answering services for small business
The same 200 minutes of a human answering your phone costs $349 at PATLive and $720 at Ruby. Identical work, 2.1 times the price. These five picks are based on published prices and on which call pattern each vendor is actually built for.
| Category | Pick | Entry price | The number behind it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best value per minute | AnswerConnect | $395/mo | $395 for 300 minutes is $1.32 a minute, the lowest published human rate we found. |
| Best for low or seasonal volume | PATLive | $49/mo | $49 a month with no minutes and $2.99 a minute. Cheapest under 17 minutes. |
| Best premium service | Ruby | $720/mo | $720 for 200 minutes with bilingual and scheduling bundled, at $3.60 a minute. |
| Best when one client is worth thousands | Smith.ai | $300/mo | $300 for 30 calls billed per call, so a long intake costs the same as a short one. |
| Best hedge if you may switch to AI | Abby Connect | $329/mo | $329 for 100 minutes with people, or double the minutes at the same price if you switch that plan to AI. |
What does the same call volume cost at each vendor?
Take a small business with 200 minutes of calls a month, which is roughly 50 conversations of 4 minutes. For each vendor we priced the cheapest combination they can actually sell you. Where a vendor does not publish an overage rate, we only counted plans that cover the whole volume, because guessing at an unpublished rate would be inventing a price. Every plan in this table is answered by a person: Abby Connect and Smith.ai both sell cheaper AI tiers, and mixing those in would compare a robot against a receptionist. If that trade is the one you are weighing, the numbers are on AI receptionist against answering service.
| Vendor | Monthly for 200 minutes | Plan used | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| PATLive | $349 | 200 minutes $349 | no contracts, 14-day trial |
| AnswerConnect | $350 | Entry $350 | plus $49.99 one-time setup on this tier |
| Smith.ai | $530 | Starter (live agents) $300 + 20 x $11.50 | 50 calls at 4 minutes each |
| Abby Connect | $599 | Professional $599 | no overage rate published |
| Ruby | $720 | Receptionist 200 $720 | no overage rate published as of 2026-09-10, minutes round up |
Over a year the gap is $4,452: $4,188 at PATLive against $8,640 at Ruby. That is not a rounding difference, it is a hire. Before you assume the dearest option is the best one, read what each is actually charging for, because two of these five will not tell you what happens when you go over.
Which gives the most minutes for the money?
AnswerConnect, $395 a month for 300 minutes. That is $1.32 a minute, the lowest published rate for a human in our whole data set, and the Growth tier carries no setup fee. Their overage is printed at $1.85 a minute, so a busy month is something you can model instead of fear. They also give the first 30 interactions under 30 seconds free each billing cycle, which matters more than it sounds if you get a lot of quick confirmations.
Two honest warnings. Their own pricing PDF contradicts itself on whether the $49.99 setup fee applies to the Growth tier, so get that confirmed in writing before you sign. And Spanish is a $30 a month add-on rather than being included, which Abby Connect, PATLive do not charge for at all. AnswerConnect also refuses to sell AI at all, which is either the reason to pick them or the reason not to.
Which is best if you only get a few calls?
PATLive Basic, $49 a month. It is the only genuine pay-as-you-go plan we could verify: no minutes included, every minute at $2.99, no contract and a 14-day trial, with US-based receptionists. For a seasonal trade, a side business or anyone whose phone rings a few times a week, it is the only plan here that does not charge you for minutes you will never use.
The ladder matters, so here it is. Under 17 minutes a month, Basic wins. Between that and about 160 minutes, Starter at $99 for 50 minutes, about 20 calls plus $2.29 overage is cheaper. Above that, Standard at $349 for 200 minutes, about 80 calls takes over at $1.75 a minute. Bilingual receptionists come at no extra cost, the cheapest Spanish option in this market.
Which is the premium option and is it worth it?
Ruby. The best-known name here, from $250 for 50 minutes up to $1,725 for 500 minutes. Their most popular tier is $720 for 200 minutes, which is $3.60 a minute, or roughly 2.7 times AnswerConnect's rate. Bilingual Spanish, scheduling and HIPAA handling are bundled, and there are no activation or setup fees.
Whether that premium is worth paying is a real question, and we will not pretend otherwise. What we will say is that Ruby is the one vendor here you cannot fully budget for. The overage rate is not published anywhere on their pricing page, and minutes are billed in 60-second increments rounded up, so ten calls of 70 seconds bills as 20 minutes rather than 11.7. If your calls are short, ask for the overage rate in writing before you sign anything.
Which is best when one client is worth thousands?
Smith.ai, from $300 for 30 calls. It bills per call rather than per minute, so a fifteen-minute intake costs the same as a two-minute message. That is the right shape for law firms, clinics and contractors, where the length of the conversation and the value of the client both run high. Inside the plan you are paying $10.00 a call at Starter and $7.00 at Pro.
The sensitivity cuts both ways, and it is worth seeing. The same 200 minutes costs very different amounts depending on how long your calls run, because you are buying conversations rather than time.
| Average call length | Calls in 200 minutes | Smith.ai cost |
|---|---|---|
| 3 minutes | 67 | $725.50 Starter (live agents) $300 + 37 x $11.50 |
| 4 minutes | 50 | $530 Starter (live agents) $300 + 20 x $11.50 |
| 6 minutes | 33 | $334.50 Starter (live agents) $300 + 3 x $11.50 |
Note the direction of the overage: an extra call above your plan costs $11.50 at Starter while the calls inside it work out at $10.00. Going over is punished, not discounted, so buy the tier that fits your busy month. Appointment booking is $1.50 a call and Spanish is $1.00 a call on the human plans, both included on their AI plans.
Which is best if you might move to AI later?
Abby Connect, from $329 for 100 minutes. They are the only vendor putting people and AI on one plan. The price does not change with your choice, but picking AI doubles the minutes included, so the rate per minute halves: Essential works out at $3.29 a minute with people against $1.65 with AI, and Professional at $3.00 against $1.50. Spanish is included on every plan, there is a free trial, and human backup is available on demand.
That transparency is the reason to pick them: you know today what changing your mind costs. The reason to hesitate is the same as with Ruby. Abby says overage is billed at your own plan's minute rate but never prints that rate, so the price for going over 200 minutes is arithmetic you do yourself from the plan price rather than a number on the page. The full comparison sits in AI receptionist against answering service.
What should you actually be spending?
Whatever is smaller than what you are losing. A service at $349 a month has to save you $349 of business you would otherwise miss, which for most trades is one job. Put your numbers in and see. If the figure comes back under $49 a month, none of this is worth buying yet.
You miss about 10 calls a week, and roughly 3 of those callers would have booked.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best answering service for a small business?
AnswerConnect for most, at $395 for 300 minutes, which is $1.32 a minute and the lowest published human rate in our data. PATLive suits low or seasonal volume better at $49 a month plus $2.99 a minute. Smith.ai wins when calls are long and clients are valuable, because it bills per call rather than per minute.
How much should a small business pay for an answering service?
For 200 minutes a month, between $349 and $720 depending on the vendor, which is a 2.1x spread for identical work. Over a year that is $4,188 against $8,640, a difference of $4,452. If you take under 17 minutes a month, pay as you go at $49 beats every plan.
What is the cheapest live answering service?
By monthly price, PATLive's Pay as you go at $49, but it includes no minutes and charges $2.99 for each one. By rate per minute, AnswerConnect Growth at $1.32. AnswerConnect also gives you the first 30 interactions under 30 seconds free each billing cycle, which quietly helps any business with a lot of quick calls.
Should a small business use people or AI to answer the phone?
Compare it at one vendor. Abby Connect sells both on one plan: the price is the same either way, but choosing AI doubles the minutes, so the rate per minute halves. On Essential that is $3.29 a minute with people against $1.65 with AI. If your calls are routine, AI captures the volume for less. If callers arrive upset or the intake is complicated, pay for people. AnswerConnect refuses to sell AI at all and builds its whole product on that position.
