24 hour answering service: who really never stops
"24/7" is the most overused word in this market, printed on plans that mean everything from true round-the-clock staffing to a bot that answers your voicemail. We checked which vendors actually say it in their own pricing copy, then priced what 600 minutes of always-on volume costs on each.
Short answer: four vendors state 24/7 coverage in their own plan descriptions: Dialzara, NextPhone, Abby Connect (AI tiers only), and Smith.ai on its live-agent line. At 600 minutes a month, NextPhone's flat $199 is the cheapest of the three we could price cleanly, ahead of Dialzara at $239 and Smith.ai at $1,440. Verified July 2026.
24/7 and after-hours are not the same purchase
A dental office that wants its 6pm-to-8am gap covered is buying after-hours overflow. A property manager fielding burst pipes at 2am, every night, all year, is buying true 24/7. Vendors market both under the same banner because the phrase tests well, but the pricing math is different: after-hours volume is usually light and predictable, while always-on volume can spike hard at the worst possible time. We price the lighter case separately in after-hours answering service costs. If your calls mostly stop by midnight and pick back up in the morning, that page has the more relevant numbers.
The vendors who put 24/7 in their own pricing copy
We read every plan note, overage line, trial term, gotcha and bestFor field across the whole vendor list for an explicit hours claim. Four made one.
| Vendor | Category | What they say |
|---|---|---|
| Dialzara, every plan | AI receptionist | 24/7 answering, booking, lead qualification, CRM and calendar |
| NextPhone, every plan | AI receptionist, flat rate | 24/7 answering, booking, transfers, SMS, recording, 26 voices |
| Smith.ai, live-agent plans | Human, hybrid company | real people 24/7, $11.50 per extra call |
| Abby Connect, AI tiers only | AI receptionist | 24/7 AI, English and Spanish, human backup on demand, $1.98 a minute |
Abby Connect's AI ladder runs four tiers, $99 to $690, all built on
the same 24/7 AI, English and Spanish, human backup on demand, $1.98 a minute
line from the entry tier. Jobber's AI Receptionist add-on, which advertised 24/7
coverage in an earlier version of its own pricing copy, no longer states it anywhere we could find, which is exactly
why we work from the vendor's current wording and not from memory. None of the three best-known human agencies,
AnswerConnect, PATLive or Ruby, make a 24/7 claim anywhere in their published plans either. We go deeper on what that
silence does and does not mean in the after-hours breakdown linked above.
What true 24/7 costs at real call volume
Light after-hours overflow and a genuinely always-on line do not cost the same, so here is the same math at 600 minutes, the kind of volume a business gets when every hour of the day carries roughly equal call risk.
| Vendor | 600 minutes a month | The working |
|---|---|---|
| NextPhone | $199 | Flat rate, unlimited calls. Same price at 100 minutes or 6,000. |
| Dialzara | $239 | Business Plus $199 for 500 minutes, plus 100 x $0.40 overage. |
| Smith.ai | $1,440 | Basic (live agents) $810 for 90 calls, plus 60 x $10.50 overage, at a 4-minute average call. |
Past a few hundred minutes a month, per-minute AI plans start losing to flat rate, exactly the crossover we work through in full in per minute against flat rate. The human option is 7.2x NextPhone's flat rate at this volume, the cost of a person answering instead of software, every hour, all month.
Who actually needs this, and who is overpaying for it
Genuine 24/7 buyers tend to share one trait: the cost of a missed call is not evenly spread across the day. Property managers, emergency trades, security and after-hours medical lines all fit that pattern, which is why we priced property management answering service costs as its own case. Most other small businesses do not fit it. If your calls cluster in business hours and just spill into the evening sometimes, full 24/7 is very likely more coverage, and more cost, than the problem requires. Go back to the after-hours numbers instead.
"24/7" also does not promise call quality at 3am matches call quality at 3pm. None of the vendors above publish separate performance data by hour, so a stated 24/7 line is a coverage promise, not a quality one. Ask what staffing actually looks like overnight before you commit to a year of it.
You miss about 10 calls a week, and roughly 3 of those callers would have booked.
The cheapest confirmed 24/7 options
Flat and simple: NextPhone at $199 for unlimited calls. Cheapest per-minute AI: Dialzara from $29. If it has to be a person answering, Smith.ai's live-agent line is the only human plan in our data that states 24/7 outright.

Frequently asked questions
What does a 24/7 answering service actually mean?
Coverage that does not depend on the time of day at all: 3am on a Tuesday gets the same answer as 3pm. That is a different job from catching the odd evening call, which is what most small businesses actually need. See after-hours coverage priced separately if that is closer to your situation.
Which answering services confirm 24/7 coverage in writing?
Four, in our data. Dialzara and NextPhone state it on every AI plan. Abby Connect states it on its AI tiers only, not its human ones. Smith.ai is the one human line that says so, on its live-agent plans specifically. AnswerConnect, PATLive and Ruby do not make the claim anywhere we could find, which we cover in more depth in the after-hours breakdown.
Is 24/7 answering different from after-hours answering?
Yes, and vendors blur the two on purpose because "24/7" sells better. After-hours means catching calls outside your posted hours, evenings and weekends mostly. True 24/7 means the line is staffed identically at every hour, which only matters if calls arrive around the clock, not just after you personally go home.
What does true 24/7 coverage cost at real call volume?
At 600 minutes a month, $239 on Dialzara's Business Plus plan with overage, $199 flat on NextPhone, or $1,440 on Smith.ai's Basic live-agent plan with overage. NextPhone's flat rate is the cheapest of the three at that volume, which is exactly the crossover point per-minute AI plans are built to avoid.
