Free AI receptionist: what's really free
One vendor in our data runs an AI receptionist that costs nothing and does not expire: Smith.ai, up to 25 calls. Everything else that gets called "free" is a time-boxed trial or a starter credit that eventually needs a card. All three are useful. None of them are the same offer, and vendors blur the line on purpose.
Short answer: Smith.ai is the only ongoing free tier we could verify. Answrr is the only no-card free trial. Retell AI publishes an exact starter credit ($10); Vapi offers one too but will not say how much until you sign up. Verified July 2026 against vendor pricing pages.
Three different things all get called "free"
Free tier
Runs forever, capped by usage rather than days. Only Smith.ai does this among vendors we could verify: 25 calls at $0, then $3.00 a call.
Free trial
Runs for a set number of days, then asks you to pay or stop. Answrr is the only one that states no card is needed to start. The rest do not say either way.
Starter credits
A dollar balance you use at your own pace, aimed at developers on usage-priced platforms. Retell AI publishes $10. Vapi offers credits without stating the amount.
The one plan that's actually free
Smith.ai AI Receptionist Free covers 25 calls at $0 a month, then $3.00 per call above that. Nothing about it expires. It does not ask for a card to start, because it is a standing plan, not a trial of one. For a business that gets a genuinely small number of calls, that is a real, permanent way to have an AI receptionist for nothing. Past 25 calls a month, the per-call rate starts adding up fast enough that it stops being the cheap option, and that is exactly where Smith.ai's own paid AI tiers begin.
Which AI receptionist has a free trial with no credit card?
Answrr: 14-day free trial with 60 minutes, no credit card required. That is the exact wording on their pricing page, and it is the only small-business AI receptionist in our data that says this plainly. Every plan on Answrr includes every feature, so what you see in the trial is the real product, not a stripped demo version of it.
One more no-card option exists, but it is built for a different buyer. Bland AI's Start plan needs no
credit card either, and its own listing says so: no platform fee, no card, inbound number included
. The difference is the shape of the
offer: Start does not hand you free minutes, it charges $0.14 a minute from your very first
call, at no platform fee. That suits a developer building their own agent, not a business that wants to try a
finished product before paying.
The trials that don't say either way
Most vendors publish a trial length and stop there. Their own pricing pages do not say whether a card is required to start, and we do not guess in either direction; if you need to know before you click through, ask the vendor directly at signup.

Simple Phones is worth a second look before you trust the number you land on: Their own FAQ still says Simple Phones "starts at $97/mo for 100 calls" while the live Stripe checkout on the same page sells that exact tier for $49. Trust the checkout, not the FAQ.
When a vendor's own pages disagree with each other, believe the checkout, not the marketing copy.
Starter credits: free money, not a free plan
Two developer-facing voice platforms hand out credit instead of a plan. Retell AI states it exactly:
$10 in free credits. Spend it at any rate and it is gone; there is no day limit attached. Vapi offers the
same idea with less transparency: their trial field reads Free credits on signup
, with no dollar figure published, so
you find out what it is worth only after you have already signed up. Neither of these is aimed at a small business
that wants a working receptionist out of the box. Both assume you, or a developer you hire, will wire up the rest.

Which ones offer no free trial at all?
Two vendors say so outright. Slang.ai: No free trial, demo only
, and it is a restaurant reservation product priced
per location, not a general receptionist. Nextiva XBert: No trial, 30-day money-back guarantee

instead of a trial, which protects you after you have paid rather than before. Neither is a bad product for what
it does. Neither belongs on a page about free options.
So what should you actually sign up for?
Free forever, at real call volume, does not exist in this market yet. What exists is a genuinely free tier for very light use, a genuinely free trial for a real test, and starter credits for developers. Pick by what you are actually doing this week. Building your own voice agent: Retell AI's credit, because the amount is at least published.
