Missed call text back: what it actually costs

Missed call text back sends an automatic SMS to a caller the instant their call goes unanswered, so a ringing phone with nobody there stops being a dead end. Five vendors in our data publish a real price for texting, from a bundled allowance inside a $99 plan to $0.05 per message billed separately. None of it is complicated to price once you know where to look, which is what this page does.

Prices read from each vendor's own pricing page in July 2026. Some links on this page are affiliate links, which never change what we say about a price.

What is missed call text back?

The mechanics are simple: a call rings out or hits voicemail, and within seconds the caller gets a text instead of silence. A basic version just apologizes and gives a callback promise. A better version asks what they need and can book a slot or answer a simple question by SMS while a human catches up. Either version beats what most businesses have today, which is nothing, because a caller who does not leave a voicemail leaves no trace at all.

It matters because of how people actually behave after a call fails. Someone who needs a plumber, a table, or an appointment today rarely waits for a callback: they call the next number on the list. A text that lands in the first minute is often the only thing standing between your business and the next search result.

Which AI receptionists actually text back a missed caller?

We read every plan note, overage line and piece of evidence in our data looking for real, priced texting features rather than a vague "SMS" bullet point. Five vendors publish something specific enough to price.

VendorTexting featurePriceWhat it covers
My AI Front Desk Business-in-a-Box $99/mo 20 outbound calls a day, 400 SMS, 100 chats, bundled into the plan price
Dialzara AI SMS Agent $19/mo a standalone two-way SMS product, priced per message on top of the flat fee
Rosie Website Texting $50/mo 25 texting conversations included, then billed per conversation past that
Smith.ai AI Receptionist Pro $150/mo custom SMS branding on outgoing texts, named directly in the plan
NextPhone Pro $199/mo SMS included at no extra cost, with two-way SMS added on the Scale plan above it

Verified July 2026. None of these vendors state on their pricing page whether texting fires automatically on every missed call specifically, as opposed to being a general two-way texting channel you can also trigger by hand. Ask for a demo of the exact trigger before you buy on that feature alone.

What missed call text back costs in practice

Two vendors bundle it in for free once you are already paying for the plan. NextPhone's Pro plan at $199 a month includes SMS outright, and its Scale tier at $599 upgrades to two-way SMS with custom integrations. My AI Front Desk's Business-in-a-Box plan at $99 bundles 20 outbound calls a day, 400 SMS, 100 chats, and anything past that draws from the same credit pool as its voice minutes.

Dialzara is the one vendor pricing texting as its own product rather than a bundled feature, which makes the real cost easy to work out: $19 a month plus $0.05 for every AI-generated message. A small business sending 60 of these a month, roughly two a day, pays $19 + 60 x $0.05 = $22. Compare that against Dialzara's own Business Lite voice plan at $29 for 60 minutes, and texting back every missed caller costs less than the voice plan that missed them in the first place. Check current Dialzara pricing.

Rosie and Smith.ai sit in between. Rosie's Website Texting add-on runs $50 a month for 25 conversations, priced and sold apart from its voice plans. Check current Rosie pricing. Smith.ai does not itemize a texting fee at all: custom SMS branding is simply part of what $150 a month buys on the AI Receptionist Pro plan, one tier above its free AI tier, which covers 25 calls before any charge applies.

One thing to check before you turn it on

Sending an unsolicited text the moment someone hangs up sits close to rules around automated business texting in the US, and none of the five vendors above address consent anywhere on their pricing pages. A caller who dials your number is not automatically the same as someone who agreed to receive texts from you, and where that line actually sits depends on wording and jurisdiction, not on what a pricing table promises.

Before you turn automatic text back on, ask the vendor directly how the outgoing message is worded, whether it names your business plainly, and whether a caller can reply STOP the way any other business text is required to allow. It is a five-minute question at signup, and cheaper to ask then than to find the answer out later.

Work out what your missed calls are costing you

A text back is cheap insurance, but it only earns its price if the calls it catches were worth catching. Put your own numbers into the calculator below before you decide which plan, if any, is worth paying for.

Revenue walking out the door

that is $5,200 a month

You miss about 10 calls a week, and roughly 3 of those callers would have booked.

Frequently asked questions

What is missed call text back?

An automatic text message sent to a caller the moment their call goes unanswered, usually something like "sorry we missed you, how can we help?" instead of silence or a generic voicemail greeting. It turns a call you lost into a conversation you can still win, and it is a feature bolted onto an answering system rather than a standalone product on its own. Verified July 2026.

Which AI receptionists actually text back a missed caller?

Five vendors in our data publish a real price for texting. My AI Front Desk bundles 20 outbound calls a day, 400 SMS, 100 chats into its $99 a month plan. Dialzara sells a standalone AI SMS Agent for $19 a month plus $0.05 per AI-generated message. Rosie sells Website Texting separately at $50 a month for 25 conversations. Smith.ai's AI Receptionist Pro plan names custom SMS branding directly. NextPhone includes SMS at no extra cost on its $199 Pro plan. None of their pricing pages spell out whether texting fires automatically on every missed call or has to be turned on, so confirm the exact trigger before you buy on that promise alone.

How much does missed call text back cost?

From nothing extra to a small per-message fee, depending on the vendor. NextPhone and My AI Front Desk fold texting into their existing plan price, $199 and $99 a month respectively. Dialzara prices it separately: $19 a month plus $0.05 a message, so 60 texts in a month comes to $19 + 60 x $0.05 = $22. That is cheap next to what a single recovered customer is usually worth.

Does missed call text back replace an answering service?

No, and treating it as a substitute is the most common mistake. A text back buys you time and stops a caller from immediately dialing the next business on the list, but it cannot answer a question, book an appointment, or judge whether a call needs someone right now. It is a safety net under an answering service, AI or human, not a replacement for one. Pair it with whichever answering option covers the calls that actually need a conversation.
