AI answering service: what it actually costs
An AI answering service is software that picks up your phone, understands the caller and responds, without a person involved. Published plans among the 8 vendors we track run from $29 a month at Dialzara to $399 at Slang.ai, and the honest working range for a small business sits closer to $99 to $199. The word "answering" also matters: it is a narrower job than a full AI receptionist, and mixing the two up is how buyers end up on a plan that cannot book an appointment.
Prices read from each vendor's own pricing page in July 2026. Some links on this page are affiliate links, which never change what we say about a price. Full picks and reasoning: best AI receptionists in 2026. Cost broken down by call volume: what an AI receptionist costs.
AI answering service vs AI receptionist: what's actually different
Vendors use both terms to sell the same product, so the label on the page tells you very little. The useful distinction is what the software actually does once it has the caller on the line. An answering service captures the call: who called, why, and a message if nobody is available. A receptionist does more of the front-desk job: it checks a calendar, books a slot, transfers a live caller to a person, or writes the result into a CRM. Plenty of products do both, priced as one tier above the other.
Rosie makes the split visible inside its own price ladder rather than across two different vendors. Professional at $49 a month is answering in the narrow sense: message taking, spam filtering, app, English and Spanish. Scale at $149 a month is the same voice and the same phone number, but it adds calendar booking and warm transfers to a human, which is the moment it becomes a receptionist rather than an answering line. Ask any vendor the same question before you buy: does it just take a message, or does it act on what the caller wants?
Watch the branding, not the name. My AI Front Desk's Basic plan at $20 a month is branded as a front desk tool and answers no phone calls at all: email, SMS and chat only, no phone answering. The $20 Basic plan answers no phone calls at all. It covers email, SMS and chat. Voice answering starts at $99. A product named "front desk" or "receptionist" is not proof it answers the phone. Check the plan, not the company name.
What does an "AI phone answering service" actually include?
Adding "phone" to the search narrows it correctly: you want voice calls answered, not a chatbot or a text inbox wearing an AI receptionist's branding. That distinction is worth checking line by line, because several vendors in this market sell phone, SMS and web chat as one bundle and do not always make clear which channel a given price actually covers. My AI Front Desk is the clearest example: its $20 entry tier is email, SMS and chat only, and voice answering does not start until $99 a month for 200 voice minutes. If a phone number that actually rings and gets answered is the point, price the plan that states voice minutes, not the cheapest number on the page.
Every AI answering service we could verify
Sorted by entry price. "Entry plan" means the cheapest tier that actually answers a phone call, so plans like My AI Front Desk's Basic that cover no voice minutes are excluded here and priced separately above.

How AI answering services actually charge you
Four billing shapes cover almost every plan in this market, and the shape matters more than the sticker price once your call volume is real rather than a demo.
Per minute
A bundle of minutes, then a published rate above it. Rosie, Dialzara and Answrr all work this way. Answrr's cheapest overage is $0.25 a minute; Dialzara's is $0.48 on its smallest plan. Cheap when call volume is steady, expensive the month it is not.
Per call
A bundle of calls rather than minutes, so a 40-second call and a 6-minute call cost the same. Simple Phones sells $49 for 100 calls a month. This shape suits businesses with many short calls, since length stops being the variable that matters.
Per customer
Goodcall bills $79 a month for 100 unique customers, with unlimited minutes included and $0.50 for every unique caller past the limit. Three calls from the same person in one week cost nothing extra, which no per-minute plan can offer.
Flat rate
One price, unlimited calls, no overage line at all. NextPhone's Pro plan is $199 a month, the same bill whether the month is quiet or the phone never stops. The entry price is higher; the ceiling does not exist.
Two more shapes exist outside those four: My AI Front Desk sells a credit pool instead of plain minutes, and Slang.ai's Core plan bills $399 a month per restaurant location, not per call at all. Neither compares cleanly to a minute bundle until you convert it, which is exactly what the hidden costs page does.
When an answering service is not enough
If your calls need booking, live transfer to a person, or a write into your calendar and CRM, price the tier above the cheapest one rather than assuming the vendor's entry plan does it. Our full picks by use case, including which vendor is cheapest at volume and which one is safest if you might want a human backup, are on best AI receptionists in 2026. Is any of this worth paying for?
Only if the calls you are missing are worth more than the plan. Put your own numbers in below before you pick a vendor from the table above.
You miss about 10 calls a week, and roughly 3 of those callers would have booked.
Two entry points worth testing
Dialzara: $29 a month for 60 minutes, the cheapest confirmed 24/7 AI plan in our data. Rosie: $49 a month for 250 minutes, the cheapest plan built for real weekly volume. Prices read from vendor pricing pages in July 2026.

Frequently asked questions
What is an AI answering service?
Software that picks up your business calls, understands what the caller wants and responds with a voice, without a person on the other end. Published plans in our data run from $29 a month at Dialzara up to $399 at Slang.ai, though most working plans for a small business sit closer to $99 to $199. "Answering" is the narrower half of the job: capturing the call and the message. Booking, transfers and CRM writes are what turn an answering tool into a full AI receptionist, and not every plan includes them. Verified July 2026.
What is the difference between an AI answering service and an AI receptionist?
Mostly marketing, but one vendor's own tiers make the practical difference visible. Rosie's Professional plan at $49 a month only takes messages: message taking, spam filtering, app, English and Spanish. Its Scale plan at $149 a month is the same product doing more of a receptionist's job: adds calendar booking and warm transfers to a human. If a vendor cannot tell you whether their AI books appointments or transfers a caller to a person, you are looking at an answering tool, whatever the marketing page calls it.
How much does an AI answering service cost?
$29 to $399 a month across the 8 vendors we could verify, but the cheapest headline is rarely the cheapest real plan. Dialzara's Business Lite at $29 holds 60 minutes, which at a 3-minute average call is about 20 calls a month, close to one working day at a time. A plan built for real weekly call volume usually starts nearer $99 to $199.
Do AI answering services charge per minute or per call?
Both exist, plus two other shapes entirely. Rosie, Dialzara and Answrr sell bundles of minutes with published overage: Answrr's cheapest overage rate is $0.25 a minute. Simple Phones sells bundles of calls instead, $49 for 100 calls a month. Goodcall charges $79 per unique caller with unlimited minutes, then $0.50 per extra caller. NextPhone skips the arithmetic: $199 flat for unlimited calls, no overage line at all.
