After-hours answering service: what actually covers your nights

Closing time is when most missed calls happen, and it is also where "answering service" pricing gets vague. We checked every vendor's own plan copy for who actually says they cover nights and weekends, then priced 100 minutes of after-hours calls on each one that does.

Short answer: among vendors that confirm after-hours coverage in their own words, AI is the cheap option. 100 minutes costs $48.20 on Dialzara or $199 flat on NextPhone. The one human line that confirms 24/7 coverage, Smith.ai's live-agent plans, prices the same volume at $300, about 6.2x more. AnswerConnect, PATLive and Ruby never say in writing whether they cover nights at all. Verified July 2026.

After-hours is not the same job as 24/7

A shop that closes at 6pm and wants evening calls caught is buying something narrower than a property manager fielding emergency calls at 3am every night of the year. Both get called "24/7 answering service" in marketing copy, which is exactly the kind of blur that makes vendor comparisons useless. This page prices the first case: a business with regular hours that wants the gap covered. For the second case, the always-on operation, see what true 24/7 coverage actually costs, priced separately so the two do not get mixed up.

Either way, the alternative is not "nothing." It is voicemail, which converts far worse than a person or a bot who can at least take a message and set expectations. Whether that gap is worth closing at all is a question the calculator further down answers with your own numbers, not ours.

Who actually says they cover nights, in their own words

Rather than guess, we pulled the exact phrase from each vendor's own plan description. Four vendors state after-hours or 24/7 coverage somewhere in their pricing copy. Four well-known human services never do, in anything we could find.

VendorCategoryWhat they say
Smith.ai, live-agent plans Human, hybrid company real people 24/7, $11.50 per extra call
Dialzara, every plan AI receptionist 24/7 answering, booking, lead qualification, CRM and calendar
NextPhone, every plan AI receptionist, flat rate 24/7 answering, booking, transfers, SMS, recording, 26 voices
Abby Connect, AI tiers only AI receptionist 24/7 AI, English and Spanish, human backup on demand, $1.98 a minute
AnswerConnect Human answering service Not stated. No after-hours or 24/7 line anywhere in their published plans.
PATLive Human answering service Not stated. No after-hours or 24/7 line anywhere in their published plans.
Ruby Human answering service Not stated. No after-hours or 24/7 line anywhere in their published plans.
Abby Connect, human tiers Human answering service Not stated. No after-hours or 24/7 line anywhere in their published plans.

That silence cuts both ways. AnswerConnect, PATLive and Ruby have been in the live-answering business for years and may well staff nights routinely, they just do not put it on the pricing page the way Smith.ai does. Abby Connect is the sharpest split: its AI tiers say 24/7 AI, English and Spanish, human backup on demand, $1.98 a minute, but the human tiers (Essential, Professional, Growth) carry no such line anywhere in their plan notes. Ask before you assume either way.

What 100 minutes of after-hours calls costs on AI

Dialzara is the clean example because its overage rate is published. Business Lite includes 60 minutes for $29, so covering 100 minutes means 40 minutes of overage at $0.48 each: $29 + 40 x $0.48 = $48.20. NextPhone skips the arithmetic entirely: $199 a month flat, unlimited calls, the same price whether after-hours volume is 20 minutes or 200.

What 100 minutes of after-hours calls costs on a human

Smith.ai bills its live-agent line per call, not per minute. At a 4-minute average call, 100 minutes is about 25 calls, which sits inside the Starter plan's 30 calls for $300 flat, no overage triggered. That is $300 for the one human line in our data that states 24/7 coverage outright, versus $48.20 for the cheapest confirmed AI option: a 6.2x premium for a person answering instead of software.

For reference only, because we could not confirm any of these three cover nights at all, the same 100 minutes prices out to $350 on AnswerConnect's Entry plan (plus a $49.99 setup fee on some tiers), $308.75 on PATLive Starter with overage, and $395 on Ruby's matching 100-minute plan. Get their after-hours policy in writing before you compare those numbers to anything above.

Who should skip after-hours coverage entirely

If your after-hours call volume is a handful of voicemails a week, not a stream of ready-to-book customers, paying $48.20 to $300 a month for coverage can cost more than the business it recovers. Run your own numbers below before picking a vendor. If the figure comes back small, cheap AI overflow (or just a better voicemail greeting) beats any of the plans on this page.

You miss about 10 calls a week, and roughly 3 of those callers would have booked.

The two confirmed 24/7 options, cheapest first

AI: Dialzara at $29 for 60 minutes, or NextPhone at $199 flat for unlimited calls. Human: Smith.ai's live-agent line from $300, the only human plan in our data that states 24/7 coverage in its own words.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as an after-hours answering service?

Coverage for the calls that land after your regular hours end: evenings, weekends, the occasional holiday. That is a narrower job than round-the-clock coverage for a business that never really closes, which is what we price separately in our 24/7 answering service breakdown. If you close at 5pm and just want those after-5 calls caught, this page is the one with your numbers.

Is AI or a human cheaper for after-hours calls?

AI, by a wide margin on the vendors that actually confirm night coverage in writing. At 100 minutes a month, Dialzara costs $48.20 against Smith.ai's $300 for the same volume on its live-agent line, roughly 6.2x more for a person. That premium buys judgement and tone a script cannot fake, which matters more on some calls than others.

Do AnswerConnect, PATLive and Ruby answer at night?

We could not confirm it from anything they publish. We read every plan note, overage line, trial term and the gotcha and bestFor fields for all three, and none of them states after-hours or 24/7 coverage anywhere. That is not proof they close at 6pm, plenty of live answering services simply do not advertise their hours on the pricing page, but it means you should get it confirmed in writing before you sign if that is the reason you are buying.

How much does after-hours coverage cost for 100 minutes a month?

On the vendors that confirm night coverage: $48.20 on Dialzara, $199 flat on NextPhone, or $300 on Smith.ai's live-agent Starter plan for a human. For reference only, since their after-hours coverage is unconfirmed in our data, the same 100 minutes would run $350 on AnswerConnect Entry, $308.75 on PATLive Starter and $395 on Ruby's matching plan.
