Live answering service: what you pay for an actual human
"Live" has one job in this market: it tells you a person, not software, will pick up. Five vendors in our data sell that specifically. Here is what the word actually means, what it costs, and how it differs from the AI plans and the ranked picks we cover elsewhere on this site.
Short answer: a live, human-answered plan runs $49 to $6,899 a month across Ruby, AnswerConnect, PATLive, Abby Connect and Smith.ai's live-agent line. The cheapest published rate per minute is $1.32 (AnswerConnect Growth), the dearest is $5.00. Verified September 2026.
What does "live" actually rule out?
Two things, specifically. It rules out AI: a voice model, however good, is not a live answering service, even when the vendor selling it uses similar language. And it rules out voicemail or a hold queue, which is what "answering service" replaces in the first place. Live means synchronous and human: someone hears your caller and responds while they are still on the line.
That definition matters because two vendors here, Smith.ai and Abby Connect, sell AI and live human plans side by side under one brand. On this page we only count the human side. Smith.ai's AI Receptionist tiers are a different product, priced separately, so we leave them out. Abby is the exception that will not split cleanly: it sells one ladder and lets you pick people or AI on the plan you already hold, so the price below is the whole plan, and choosing AI would double the minutes rather than move you to another product. The AI comparison is in AI receptionist against answering service.
What does every human-answered plan really cost?
Plan price divided by included minutes, for every human plan that is actually described in minutes. Smith.ai bills per call instead, so it gets its own table below rather than being forced into a per-minute number that would not be real.
| Vendor and plan | Monthly | Minutes | Real rate per minute |
|---|---|---|---|
| AnswerConnect Growth | $395 | 300 | $1.32 |
| AnswerConnect 1,500 minutes | $2,025 | 1,500 | $1.35 |
| PATLive 5,000 minutes | $6,899 | 5,000 | $1.38 |
| PATLive 4,000 minutes | $5,599 | 4,000 | $1.40 |
| AnswerConnect 750 minutes | $1,050 | 750 | $1.40 |
| PATLive 3,000 minutes | $4,299 | 3,000 | $1.43 |
| AnswerConnect Standard | $575 | 400 | $1.44 |
| PATLive 2,000 minutes | $2,899 | 2,000 | $1.45 |
| PATLive 1,000 minutes | $1,499 | 1,000 | $1.50 |
| PATLive 500 minutes | $759 | 500 | $1.52 |
| PATLive 300 minutes | $479 | 300 | $1.60 |
| PATLive 200 minutes | $349 | 200 | $1.75 |
| AnswerConnect Entry | $350 | 200 | $1.75 |
| PATLive 100 minutes | $189 | 100 | $1.89 |
| PATLive 50 minutes | $99 | 50 | $1.98 |
| Abby Connect Growth | $1,380 | 500 | $2.76 |
| Abby Connect Professional | $599 | 200 | $3.00 |
| Abby Connect Essential | $329 | 100 | $3.29 |
| Abby Connect Starter | $165 | 50 | $3.30 |
| Ruby Receptionist 500 | $1,725 | 500 | $3.45 |
| Ruby Receptionist 200 | $720 | 200 | $3.60 |
| Ruby Receptionist 100 | $395 | 100 | $3.95 |
| Ruby Receptionist 50 | $250 | 50 | $5.00 |
PATLive's pay-as-you-go plan is not in that table because it includes no minutes to divide by, not because it is unimportant: at $49 a month with every minute billed at the overage rate, it is the cheapest entry point in the whole category for a business that only takes the occasional call. Full rate math for every plan, including how the overage ladders work, lives in answering service pricing.
Where does Smith.ai fit?
Smith.ai's live-agent line bills per call, not per minute, so a long intake costs the same as a short one. Its three human tiers are separate products from its AI Receptionist plans, priced far higher because a person, not a model, is on every call.
| Plan | Monthly | Calls included | Rate per call |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smith.ai Starter (live agents) | $300 | 30 calls | $10.00 |
| Smith.ai Basic (live agents) | $810 | 90 calls | $9.00 |
| Smith.ai Pro (live agents) | $2,100 | 300 calls | $7.00 |
Why is this not a "best answering service" ranking?
That page picks winners for specific situations: best value, best for low volume, best premium option, and so on. This one deliberately does not rank anything. It exists so you can see the full live-answering category, its full price range and every plan in it, before you read anyone's opinion about which one to pick, including ours. Read the definition here, read the recommendation there.
Is a live answering service the same as an AI receptionist?
Abby Connect is the one vendor that puts a number on the difference without asking you to compare two price lists: the same $1,380 plan covers 500 minutes answered by people, or 1000 minutes answered by AI. Read the other way round, a minute of human answering costs 2 times a minute of AI at the same vendor on the same plan, which is roughly what "live" costs on top of AI. The full comparison, across every vendor rather than one, is in AI receptionist against answering service.
Which vendor will not give you a live price?
Nexa sells human answering and calls it live, but publishes no price for it anywhere. Publishes plan sizes but no prices at all. You cannot compare Nexa against anyone without a sales call.
We do not
give Nexa a pricing page of its own for the same reason we do not invent numbers for anyone: a page built on one
unconfirmed figure would claim a certainty we do not have. See it listed among the vendors that will not publish a
price at every vendor that keeps pricing off the page.
Who actually needs a human instead of AI?
Live answering earns its premium on calls where tone and judgement matter: an upset customer, a complicated intake, a caller who needs to be talked through something rather than routed. Routine bookings, order status and simple scheduling are usually cheaper and just as effective on AI. If most of your calls are the second kind, run the numbers before paying human rates for machine-shaped work.
You miss about 10 calls a week, and roughly 3 of those callers would have booked.

Frequently asked questions
What does "live answering service" actually mean?
A real person answers your phone in real time, not a bot, not voicemail, not a hold queue. In our data that is five vendors: Ruby, AnswerConnect, PATLive and Abby Connect outright, plus Smith.ai on its live-agent plans specifically, separate from the AI Receptionist plans it also sells under the same brand.
How much does a live answering service cost per month?
From $49 to $6,899 a month across the five vendors, depending on volume and which one you pick. The realistic entry point for steady small-business volume sits in the low hundreds; the true rate per minute, which matters more than the sticker price, ranges from $1.32 to $5.00 across published plans.
How is this different from your best answering service page?
That page ranks vendors and picks winners for different situations. This one defines the category and prices every plan in it, without declaring a winner, so you can see the full ladder before you read anyone's recommendation, including ours.
Should I get a live answering service or an AI receptionist?
Depends on what the call needs. Routine bookings and simple intake are cheaper on AI, often a third of the price or less. Calls where tone, judgement or an upset caller matter are what you are paying the human premium for. We price both sides of that decision in AI receptionist against answering service.
